Ritual

Gouache on Cradled Panel, Original Available

This painting is dedicated to my late mother-in-law, Teresa. Upon her sudden passing, I was struck with curiosity for the rituals that we associate with death in my (Italian American) culture. I was also filled with imagery related to the overlap of myself and her and the things that plagued her in her lifetime. In this image, the figure has an expression that comes from the calm and reassurance we feel when occupied by something that feels purposeful…instead of anxious or depressed because of what we can not control. She is cultivating a thriving garden from the debris of mortality.
