I painted this for the group show, “MIGHTY Small Works” at Modern Eden Gallery in San Francisco. The only criteria for the show as to create a piece of a certain (small) size. I had ideas to illustrate faces with flowers or animals and then the Roe v. Wade ruling came. I sat and looked at my canvas and just knew I needed to channel my internal response onto it. The reference is of my own body holding a prop skull and ferns from my own studio…REAL life. And the feelings I poured into this image are just as real. Too dumbfounded to yell or fight, I simply needed to express.
The sides of the panel are painted in bright red, partly to be a stylish accent and partly as an exclamation point - to accentuate the statement I am making.
